WGA Closing Day Results November 7th 2012

WGA Closing Day Luncheon at National
I always knew our ladies were tough but today that fact was abundantly clear when the National Golf Club held it's closing day for the WGA. We had 13 ladies show up today and brave the cold morning start. The ladies started at 10am and the temp at that time was barely creeping out of the 30's. The format today was just 9 holes of captains choice followed by luch in the Members lounge. The 9 hole ladies played along with the 18 hole ladies to make up the teams and we saw some excellent golf from the ladies.

The Net winner was the team of Dot Kennihan and Bev Harper who scorched the front nine with a 32.5 to take home $6.50 each in pro shop credit. Well done girls!

The Gross winner of today's event was the duo of Maureen Buckley and Norma Hyland. The managed to get around the front 9 in one over par 37 to best their nearest competitor by one shot. Nice playing ladies! They will also receive $6.50 each in pro shop credit for their excellent work on the links.

We had one chip in to end the season and that was Bev Harper who ushered her team to victory with a most excellent chip in for par on the 6th hole. Way to go Bev!

Even though this is the last official WGA play day of the year we don't want our girls resting on their laurels all winter. We will have regular times booked on Wednesdays and Friday's around 10am for all those wanting to play. Those interested in playing please either email (proshop@nationalgolfclub.com) or call the golf shop and we will put your name on the list.

Don't forget about the Champions dinner rescheduled for Friday the 16th of November. We hope that all of you can make time for this exciting evening to celebrate or 2012 champions. The event will start with Cocktails at 6pm with dinner and awards to follow.

Thanks to all the WGA members for all the nice words about the WGA Blog. I have enjoyed doing it and we here at National will strive to continue improving our communication with our most valuable asset, Our Members.

 Thanks again,
 Dave

2012 Couples Member Guest "Fall Classic" Results

The weather for this years Couples Member Guest seemed to be on every ones mind but Superstorm Sandy only gave us a we bit o wind and that is about it.  Not nearly enough to deter any of our hearty competitors from playing in the 2012 Couples Member Guest Fall Classic.  We had a nice showing of 13 teams which gave us 52 total players.  A big thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Hyland and Mr. & Mrs. Boals for coordinating this event.  They did a  great job and should be commended for all of their hard work making sure this years Fall Classic was one to be remembered.  The weekend started off with a practice round better ball game on Friday where we saw great participation and some very low scores!  Joel & Cindy Tew along with their guests Craig & Donna Linton fired an amazing 16 under par 56 which was two shots better than their closest competitors and earned them the top paying spot in the Friday Better Ball game.  The final two paying spots for second and third place were our tournament organizers.  Team Boals/Tufts scored a very respectable 58 with the help of Tom Boals back nine score of 39 gross!  Team Hyland/Watterworth rounded out the top paying spots with a scorecard playoff at 59.

Saturday's forecast was 70% chance or rain and high winds.  That forecast did not come through as predicted and the Fall Classic went on as scheduled.  So much for Superstorm Sandy.  The format for tournament day was 2 best balls of the four player team with both gross and net divisions.  The top paying spots were 1st place gross along with 1st, 2nd & 3rd place net.  We had three special event holes with hole #9 as the beat the pro hole along with closest to the hole prizes for ladies on the 12th and men on the 17th.  We had Gordon "Great Scot" McKinlay out on the 9th challenging all comers with his silky smooth swing.  The game was that you could bet any amount you wanted and if you hit it closer than the Pro you doubled your money.  This game was a no loose game though because if you did not hit it closer you still got your money in pro shop credit.  This fact may have eluded Norman "the crusher" Finegold who bet the minimum $5 and careened one off of the rocks into the middle of the pond but not his wife Karen who stepped up the bet to $10 and proceeded to knock it to within 3 feet nearly holing the ball out to beat the Great Scot who had hit his ball to about 12 ft.  Gordon continued to be on his game as we had near 100% participation in this event with only 12 players beating the pro.  Congratulations to those players.  The closest to the hole on #12 for the ladies was Diane Tufts and the winner for closest to the hole on the 17th was Lynn Olmsted.

First Place in the Gross division went to the team of Bruce & Lorraine Chalas along with their guests, Lynn & Diane Olmsted.  They carded a respectable score of four over par 148 to beat their nearest competitor by two shots.
The First place net winners were the team of Ray & Becky Deaton with our former members Mike & Kathy Fiske.  They fired an astounding score of 22 under par 122 which surprisingly was only two shots ahead of the 2nd place finishers of team Boals/Tufts.  Rounding out the last paying spot was the Michigan connection of Scott & Sharon Fields along with Joe & Kim Deyonker.  They were at 16 under 128.  Well done to all of the top competitors.

The golf was followed with a very nice cocktail reception where the winners were announced.  The evening was concluded with Dinner and Dancing in the ballroom.   Good times were had by all who participated and the anticipation is already building for next years Fall Classic!  Thanks to everyone who played in this wonderful event and to those that contributed their time in making it happen.

Scott Fields demonstrating exceptional skills with his favorite club in the bag.

Team Michalek finishes up on the 16th.  They get my vote for best dressed.

Cindy Boals attempting to hole one on the 5th.
Steve Tufts cleaning up after taking a dip in the creek on the 5th hole.

Tom Beddow shoots one over the creek on #5 as Kathy looks on.

Wanda Little attempts to hit it closer than her playing partner Kathy.  That may be a tall order though as you can see how close her ball is to the hole here.

George Little attempting to get this one over the creek on #5.  He did get it over the creek but we won't talk about where it ended up.

2012 Ladies Club Champions Crowned

This years 2012 Ladies Club Championship was a bit of Jekyll and Hyde for our playing conditions.  The ladies enjoyed sunny and 84 degrees for the first day of competition then for the final day had to fight their way through a tough rainy start that saw the high temperature peak out in the morning and just get cooler through the day.  That seemed to have no affect on our ladies who battled through and came out shining in the end.  The day one leader was Dot Kennihan.  After a bit of a rough start for Dot on the front nine with a score of 45 she hit the accelerator on the back 9 and was even par through the first 8 holes.  We won't mention the double bogey she made on the 18th, oops I just did.  Sorry Dot.  Even with the double on 18 Dot was able to shoot a beautiful 38 on a back to take a 5 shot lead over Diane Tate after day one.

Day two of the competition saw our temperatures plummet into the low 60's and our leader was doing a good job of holding off the competition with a front nine score of 44 that was equal to her nearest competitor which held her 5 shot lead with only 9 holes left.  She used that comfortable cushion to coast in to the winners circle with a final round score of 86 and a two day total of 169.  Great work Dot!  Diane Tate was able to capture the Net portion of the Ladies Club Championship with a two day net total of 145.  Nice job Diane.

Thanks to all the ladies who came out to compete in this years championship.  We truly appreciate your playing in the event.

Best,

Dave

WGA Results for October 3rd 2012

A bit of a muggy day for our first WGA Play day of October 2012.  We had a low putts format today where you just count up your putts and see who has the least.

In the 18 hole division we saw three ladies work their way into the payout column of the balance sheet with their exceptions flat stick prowess.  In the third place position we had Lynn Dunn with 31 puts.  The American Ryder Cup team could have used her this past weekend don't you think?  2nd place finisher was Tricia Knight.  She had 30 putts today.   In the top spot today was a familiar face back from the north country was Pat Blank with a low low total of 29.  Great work ladies!

The 9 hole ladies had 5 competitors vying for the head spot at the dinner table.  Beverly Logan found her way into the payout column with a second place finish taking only 21 putts.  The 9 hole champions was Karen Mamuzic, Who found time out from remodeling their home to play a little golf and grab that 1st place prize by taking only 18 putts. Wow!  Nice!

We had one chip in and one birdie today and they were both on the 12th hole and as you could guess by the same person.  Way to go Maureen Buckley for that nice chip in birdie on the 12 hole!

Thanks for playing ladies.  Don't forget to sign up for this weekends Ladies Club Championship and for next weeks WGA Play Day on the 10th.  The format will be Low Net/Low Gross and we will start at 9:00 am for the last time this year.

Best,

Dave

WGA Play Day Results for Wednesday September 26th

Today's President's cup had an excellent showing of 18 ladies total with 13 eighteen holers and 5 nine holers enjoying another beautiful day out on the links.

In the 18 hole competition we had what looks like a very familiar leader board with Norma Hyland taking the top spot in the Gross side of things.  She scored a 90 to edge out Diane Tate who finished in second place.  Nice going Norma!  On the net side of things we had Cindy Boals and long hitting Pia Orlandi sharing the top spot with a score of 76.  Great going girls!

In the 9 hole ranks we had Heather Barnwell swooping in to collect her first place spot with a score of 56.  She is an occasional player but seems to collect some coin every time she tee's it up.  Another who would qualify for that label would be Mrs. Karen Mamuzic.  She shot a very respectable net 39 to take home first place money.  Nice going ladies!

We had two chip-ins today with Betty Lunch draining one on the 3rd hole and Cindy Boals holing it out on the 9th.  They split the pot that was a carry over from the previous weeks event.  Way to go!

The birdie tree had some action also with Cindy Boals making a tweeter on the 9th hole with here chip in and Maureen Buckley carding a 2 on the 12th for her birdie.  Awesome!

Thanks to all the ladies for competing this week.  We hope to see you next week for the Low Putts format.  We will shotgun at 9:00 am sharp.

Make sure to congratulate our Interclub II ladies on Back to Back to Back Championships!
Tricia Knights, Norma Hyland, Maureen Buckley, Dot Kennihan, Diane Tate & Becky Deaton

Best,

Dave

2012 Ladies Member Guest Results

The 2012 Ladies Member Guest was completed yesterday despite the threat of thunderstorms and a tornado watch.  Our ladies are not scared of a little rain or the occasional twister are they.
The overall theme for the event was an homage to Julia Child's 100th birthday celebration "For the love of Julia" so the ladies came decked out in their best aprons and their strings of peals and a few decorated their carts with miscellaneous cooking utensils.  It was quite the event!

Thanks to the hard work of all the volunteers this event was one to remember.  Our ladies really know how to put on a great event and this was no exception.  Karen Finegold and Tracy Lorenz orchestrated the event and recruited some great talent to help pull it off.  Great work you two and to all others who put in a lot of work to make this event shine!

Now we get to the results of the event.  We had two flight in the event.  The Les Champignons flight and the Les Poussins flight.  We had overall Champions from the entire field in the gross and net categories and then we had Gross and Net flight winners.  All the ladies fought hard today to finish through the rain and the wind and they all deserve a bit of congratulations for that for sure.

In the Les Champignons Flight we had the team of Tricia Knight, Charlotte Leidy, Lisa Butcher & Kit Graves come out on top as the gross flight winners with an excellent score of 5 under par 67.  Great work ladies!  The Net flight winners comprised the team of Stephanie Stokes, Liz Bode, Maureen Buckley and Marty Maugh.  They came in with a beautiful score of Net 58.8.  Nice going girls!

In the Les Poussins Flight we had the team of Beverly Harper, Jan Cashion, Becky Deaton and Jan Stewart claim the Gross Flight winner prize with a 2 under par 70.  Afterwards Mrs. Harper was herd talking about reworking her whole golf game.  Sounds just like Tiger Woods when he was at the top of his game.  I guess she is just not satisfied with perfection.  Good going ladies!  The Net Flight winners were made up of some of our regular 9 hole ladies group.  I guess they are going to have to start competing with the 18 holers after this exceptional tournament performance.  They carded a nice 11 under par net 61 to win.  Congratulations to Cathy Roofe, Kay Bullard, Beverly Logan & Stefanie Cox!

Now on to the overall champions in the Net & Gross Divisions.
The Net Champion came out of the Les Poussins flight and lets just say these girls golfed their balls!  The team was comprised of two Mother-Daughter Duo's.  We had one of our tournament organizers Karen Finegold with her daughter Anne Richter along with Lorraine Chalas and Nicole Chalas.  This team edged out the nearest competitor by half a stroke with 57.2 to claim their prize.  Great work team!
The Gross Champion came out of the Les Champignons flight.  The team of Diane Tate, Cara Hardinger, Mickey Wirtz, and Anne Thompson carded a 6 under par 66 to claim the Over All Gross Champion prize.  Awesome job ladies!

We had some special event winners with two closest to the hole prizes and a hit inside the pearl necklace hole on the 12th.  The winner for the Members closest to the hole on #9 was Tracy Lorenz and the Winner for the closest to the hole for Guests on #2 was Nancy Keel.  No ladies made it inside the string of Pearls on the 12th hole but Kathy Fiske did hit it the closest so she took home the big prize for that hole.

Thanks to all the ladies for making this event a real success.  It is your exceptional involvement and hard work that makes this event what it is.  Great work and congratulations to all the ladies who played in and helped out with the 2012 Ladies Member Guest.
